Too clever by half How Adani’s lobbying may cost Adani Green over US $100 million

An import-duty on solar equipment that the Indian government imposed following lobbying led by the Adani Group has been a public-policy disaster. The policy was designed to protect India’s domestic manufacturing of solar panels. But it has failed in that objective and slowed down India’s transition to renewable energy. A duty-evasion scheme has allegedly defrauded the government of at least $228 million. The price of solar power in India has increased. More coal is being burned. And associated court rulings may cost Adani Green over US $100 million.

Environmental and Human Rights struggle is not a fight against fascism

Text of a talk delivered by Abir Dasgupta at the Anti Fascist Grand Conference in Calcutta. The talk was in Hindi, this is the English original. The group is an exemplary product of Hindu Fascist political economy.

Is Bangladesh’s electricity contract with Adani legally void?

Bangladesh is attempting to re-visit the deal it made with Adani for buying electricity from its Godda power plant. According to the Bangladesh power company buying the power, Adani is charging too high a price for its coal imports. In this exclusive analysis of the official contract between Adani and Bangladesh, AdaniWatch asks whether the agreement should be considered legally void due to Adani’s inclusion of costs that appear to be non-existent. The agreement as it currently stands will cost Bangladesh significantly more than it should. The cost of power from Godda will be three times more than that imported from other Indian power plants.

Adani’s solar plans endanger livelihoods and wildlife in Rajasthan

A recent protest against alleged encroachment on pasture by an Adani solar-power project in the western Indian state of Rajasthan was the latest in a series of conflicts spurred by an aggressive plan for huge arrays of solar panels in this arid zone. The sprawling industrial installations threaten ancestral grazing lands, oases and some of the last habitat of the Great Indian Bustard. Such conflicts could be avoided with proper regulation and community consultation.

Provincial elections had just been held and a new government had been elected in the state of Jharkhand. Spokespeople for the new government were quoted saying that they would take a fresh look at the approval for Adani’s power station because of the controversial confiscation of farmers’ lands.
